History of Loban Loban History

Loban village was founded about 80 years ago as a small mercenary fort, financed by the Miners' Guild to protect and maintain a trail which still leads to active copper and tin mines in the hills to the northwest. Though paid by the guild, the five mercenaries originally stationed at the base were nominally the sheriff of Olokand's retainers, and acted in his name to keep the peace in the area.

Being the last outpost of civilization on the Fur Road north to Orbaal, the settlement prospered as a caravan stop. By 650, several freeholders had sought and obtained land grants from the Sheriff to settle in the area. Several of these early settlers were slain by marauding Taelda tribesmen, but the mercenary fort prevented an outright massacre. By 673, the village (then called Ambarin) had a population fo about 40, including the mercenaries and their families.

In 689, the Ambarin mercenary captain, Loban of Dezaller, served valianty during King Torastra's Kathela Hills campaign (a war against the Boii) and was knighted on the field. Sir Loban was made a vassal of the Earl of Olokand (at this time, the King of Kaldor and Earl of Olokand were one and the same) with Amabarin as his fief. Sir Loban was also charged to provide protection for the Miner's Guild in return for an annual subsidy of 1,200 silver pieces, which was shared with his liege in the form of an annual feudal obligation of 100 bushels of rye. He also encouraged settlement in the area by granting land in return for serfdom.

When Sir loban died in 693 as a result of a lucky shot from a Taelda bow, his 23 year old son, sir Gunart, assumed command and named the village after his father. Under Gunart's leadership, the fief expanded to the banks of the River Ambarin, the present manorhouse was built, and the village expanded to 32 families. Sir Guanrt died in 715 (Six years ago), from a drunken fall down the manor tower's steps, and his eldest son, Sir kathel, inherited the estate.
